Life trembled on foal’s limbs,
then steadied to carry me
through nursery lanes.
In spring the filly frolicked
through meadows of wild flowers,
stimulating my senses.
I relished the ride
in arenas of vivid colours,
by scented blossoms.
Now the mare lopes
across stony ground
until jaded -- my gusto faded.
“Gee-up! No time to canter
around this carousel.”
I’m giddy from spinning pictures.
“ Halt!” the reins are slipping,
my perspiring hands
begin to lose their grip.
I can’t dismount --
take time to see the scenery.
This horse gallops on,
hurtling towards hurdles.
The nag retires, gait arrested,
after catapulting me to the ground.
I sit on the fence, silently watching
her limp and graze pastures.
I wonder when --
we’ll say “goodbye”?
