I Held Her Lifeless Body Against My Breast
Author: Terrie*

lookin' out the window
as i was tryin' to reach
the love of my life by phone

i saw a reflection
of a shadow juming out of a car
i had to quickly hang up
and chance missin' his voice

i looked up and from
a distance thought i saw
a woman clutching a tiny puppy
all covered in blood

as i looked closer
i saw the features of a child
tears rolled
before i knew what went on
i called 911 from my cell
and gave them my location

still in my scrubs
i grabbed the child
as i handed the cell to the mom

i took off my top and wrapped it
around the wound
i held her child
close to my breast
so she could feel my heart beat
as i was performin' C.P.R

i've dealt with blood
soaked on me
i've held a child burned
from flames
your heart melts when
your faced with a child's wounds
afterwards your not the same

the firemen arrived
i gave the mom my cell
to give me an update

when she returns
she cain just give it back
all covered in innocent blood
i apologized and told them all
i must get back inside

one fireman knew me very well
and after the paramedics arrived
he came over to see
if i was gonna be alright

i looked at him
with tears in my eyes
and asked him
honestly after somethin' like this
how cain some one be alright??

the child i would say
was perhaps about 18 months
ridin' in her car seat
in the back of her car

a stray bullet finds it's way inside

i got the call i waited for
not from the mom
but from the fireman i knew
the news was pleasant
and he said we both deserve
to share coffee and a conversation
and we did

------- Author's Notes -------

sometimes God places things in our path, so we may open our hearts to our own life. and appreciate life and love, life can be like a passin' cloud. this happened a distance away from my window as i was tryin' to reach my love by phone..
