Friendship

A friend is not a person
You’ll play golf with on Sundays,
Nor are they the co-worker
You carpool with on Mondays.

Those you met a month ago
Have no history with you,
Yet you still convince yourself
That their friendship will be true.

Have you no understanding
Of the difference, in the end,
Between simple acquaintance,
And the truest kind of friend?

A friend has your best interests
In their heart, as time goes by.
You won’t see their love vanish,
When you don’t see eye to eye.

There is no competition,
Between those of kindred souls.
A friend would never covet
What you’ve earned, pursuing goals.

You’ll be lucky if you can,
On the day when your life ends;
Count upon a single hand,
Your sincere and faithful friends.

For he is dependable,
She is worthy of your trust.
A devoted confidant,
With a heart both fair and just.

You needn’t fear her counsel,
Nor suspect his word a lie.
Ere deceit escape their lips,
A true friend would rather die.

Yet we are so cavalier
With the love that we extend.
Proving we don’t understand
What it means to be a friend.

If waters are not tested
Before the diver embarks,
Too late, he may discover,
He is surrounded by sharks.

So make your choices wisely,
Lest you all meet lonely ends.
Don’t forget who earned your trust
When its time to count your friends.

Mark your words are an insight Inspiration ...

to my soul...the words you write expressin' life , so true and humble comin' from the core of a givin' heart, Mark i truely enjoy your inspirations, at times i do not quite understand life and it's trials, until i realize it was i whom allowed myself into that portrait ,for a reason i needed to make myself strong , words so true, i am hearin' you ! i always hope and pray that I may be counted as true friend, not just for one day, but for many before i share my last breath and never back slide on my promised word..thank you for these great words of counsil ! i truely needed to hear them before i start my day...

Great read

I always say it is better to have one really good friend who really cares, than lots of friends that wouldn't give you any support when its needed. Great poem
