War, What For?

In their land, what are we here for?
Drafted, out of high school, we have to go fight this war
Nineteen, looking around, still a kid, where's the enemy?
They're all around, disquised as many
So confused, can't tell them apart
How will we know, is it papa-san with water buffalo pushing a cart?
When they shoot, he's the one to stop
Great? Just like back home on Hill Top
What kind of war is this anyway?
No front line, could be passing the enemy on highway
Look at those people, big straw hats, they don't want to fight
Planting rice, living everyday life, in spite of our invading sight
They're just like us, with families and friends
Moms and Dads, with children running around who depends
For hundreds of years, very little has changed
You think we'll change their way of life, even if strange
Children carrying two buckets of water on stick, grass shack and dirt floor
War! What are we fighting for?
Look at those people, black pajamas, some topless, could care less even if poor
North and South, what are they talking about, same people, bombs a constant roar
They just want to live their everyday nomal life
Not fight their own kind, up North, with guns and knife
Hiding in backyards and jungle, we're fighting a losing battle
Make them old mans responsible for this, fight each other with canes and rattles
Play chess, checkers, not use us as ponds, their strategy
History shows, back to the way they were, same society
Nothing has changed, still planting the same way rice
Aftermath, thousands and thousands dead, both sides, wasn't very nice
War! Why are we fighting, for?

I like your poem, my dad was in that war. He hardly ever talks about it without freaking out , but what he does say tells me war is wrong .

Thanks

Thanks for your comment. This is a touchy subject. I don't know how people will take this? Your Dad must of seen things that was very ugly. I've never really shared my inner thought, untill now. I saw some ugly things, lost a few friends, working in the mountains with 100 guys repairing their roads and our heavy equipment. Thanks again!

true

A touching poem Dino. The terrible truth about war is all the innocent people who die. people who don't want war, ordinary people, even children. ....and we're left wondering...Why? Thanks...food for thought !!

a good read

I agree with Capricorn and Megan. It was a very well drafted poem. Infact, I submitted a poem to Dreamer about this very topic... hopefully it will post soon. I'd like to see if it is at least close to accurate (if you wouldn't mind Dino).
