We Were Born To Serve The Blues: Poems 1 To 5
31 March, 2009
Author: Colin Stewart
My pockets are empty and I've got the Honky Tonk blues
as the jukebox selections beckon me to choose
and there's a presence behind me whom I must thank.
A dime comes from the shadows and a fellow named Hank!
--
No one has returned from the other side
to enlighten us with a travel guide.
All available information has been denied
and the idea of a postcard only implied!
--
Bob Barker was strapped to the roulette wheel.
An olive branch may have closed the deal
but Joseph Stalin continued to fight
the evil capitalism of The Price is Right!
--
In that rear view mirror I left it all behind
and looked straight ahead to clear my mind
but my truck broke down and I'm paying these dues
when you avail yourself to the blues!
--
Can he not bear to see the slough on my face
or respond to the plea for his embrace.
Before the Gulag I once had grace
but God has vanished without a trace!
