Fear

When I was young, I knew fear
Fear of the dark,
Fear of the monsters under the bed,
Fear of the bumps in the night
I thought that was true fear, but I was wrong

When I was a little older, I knew fear
Fear of moving from one house to another,
Fear of starting a new school,
Fear of not knowing anyone and having to make new friends
I thought that was true fear, but I was wrong

When I was in High School, I knew fear
Fear of not getting into a good college,
Fear of leaving everything I knew behind,
Fear of starting over yet again
I thought that was true fear, but I was wrong

When I moved from my parents house, I knew fear
Fear of failing at what I had chosen to do,
Fear of making the wrong choices that could not be undone,
Fear of starting over yet again
I thought that was true fear, but I was wrong

When I started getting sicker, I knew fear
Fear that I would continue getting worse,
Fear that my doctors wouldn't be able to help,
Fear that the cure would be worse than the disease
I thought that was true fear, but I was wrong

We all have fears in our lives
From those of childhood to those of adulthood
They are largely the same for all of us...in one form or another
Accepting those fears is part of living life

So what is true fear?
True fear comes from being afraid to live your life
And accepting that fear is always a part of it
You cannot outgrow it,
You cannot outrun it,
You can not outlive it
Accept the fear and don't let it ever stop you
From being the person you want to be
And doing the things you want to do

Fear

I like the way this poem edges you on to look for the meaning of fear. That paralyzing one that keeps you from moving forward. Reminds me of the old adage "there is nothing to fear but fear itself" only better. It is making me take a look at my own interpretation of fear. Thank-you. Very thought provoking write. :)
