All Grown Up In His Eyes, But Not In His Heart
11 August, 2005
Author: Terrie*
wake up, get ready for a new day
to start my job, so excited my very first day
gave up my nursing class to help out in a friends restaurant
look in my closet, now i see what my dad was talkin' 'bout
i was gonna say i'll search for a black skirt
seems like my closet is so full
and black, silver and lace is all it screams
i look in the mirror hopin' it isn't too short
all i see is nothin' but legs
walk out into the hall-way i ask my dad
daddy what do you think?
i dare not ask my brother's
for i'd sure would never get out
i caught a tear in his eye he hid from me
he took my hand as we walked into mama's room
he said to her look at our little girl
she looked at me with that same tear
her and daddy seemed to share
they both said, your dressed to kill the man on the moon
well not literally but he better be hangin' safely in orbit
if he looks down and see's you
always dressed in black and lace i often seen
yet never was aware
how much my little girl has grown
he gave me a hug
i bent down, gave mama a kiss
i went back into my room
i place every ring and ear-ring in it's proper place
look in the mirror slap on some make up
brush out my long black hair, done like so
shaved at the back, yet still long enough to cover no one cain tell
a bit of eyeshadow to wake up these spanish eyes
and some lip liner to add detail to these thin lips
my dad joins me upon my walk
to the restaurant, we share a cup of coffee
before my day kicks in
my dads advice
do not talk to strangers on the way home
i look at him and smile, dad i'm 19
your lil girl is all grown up do you not see?
he replies, in my eyes you have grown
but in my heart your not
so after work please come home to me
