Raging Volcano

Mount Merapi
is spewing out
charcoal clouds of hot ash.

It is broadcast on tv live-
the spectacular
intensifying changes
of this angry volcano.

I only wish
my own rage
which is buried
deep
in unknown places
would ooze out
more quietly -
would leave no destruction.

An avalanche of debris rolls down
the side of the mountain.
My anxieties spill
out.

Thousands of people on the
island of Java
refuse to leave.
You remain here-
staying
staying
sleeping
staring

The mystic beliefs of the mountain
are everywhere.
Incense is burned.
I light white candles
for peace,
for calm,
for my sanity.

Indonesia has 129 active volcanoes.
You are always
waiting to
erupt
at a moments notice.

Champa incense swirls
more noticeably through my rooms
on this early morning.
