Premonition

Night’s images were vivid;
a male Dalmatian bounding
round my lawn as if at home.
In reality, my collie dog
had paw-stepped into Paradise;
this puckish pup intruded
on her domain.

Four years on, longing for
canine company, I explore
the tangled web,
but nothing clicked, until --

4 year old male Dalmatian
terrific personality
owner hospitalized
dog needs a new home

Driven to the rescue home
many miles away,
my insides were knotted.

It was surreal to see him
as in my nocturnal imaginings,
recognisable by his large spot
-- a pirate patch.
A big, boisterous boy;
I was awash
with confidence to cope.

I signed the forms, picked up
his lead and papers.
A hand-knitted blanket
brought a pang of sadness
for a sick mistress.

While I Peruse his documents
he rushes across the grass,
-- quite at home.
Patches Revenge – his pedigree name,
portrays a facial birthmark
and his delivery date
was the night I had that dream.

------- Author's Notes -------

This is a true story as I dreamed about my new dog around the time he was born.
