Maggies Dream

Maggie might be like her friends,
With dreams that might come true,
Except that Maggie’s life would end
Before the year was through.

Maggie wasn’t like her friends.
Her eyes were cobalt blue,
But the color of her hair,
She never really knew.

For Maggie was on “chemo”
For most of her short life.
Never would she fall in love.
Never would she be his wife.

Maggie was precocious.
Her character was strong.
The hand that she’d been dealt,
She played just like a song.

She was our only daughter.
She was our shining light.
Gone now is her laughter.
Maggie died last night.

Maggie was more brave than bold.
Her memory will survive.
She was only four years old.
Her dream was to be five.

------- Author's Notes -------

This is without a doubt the saddest thing I have ever written. I'm thankful that it's fiction.

Still, when feeling sorry for ourselves, (and I admit to sometimes doing that myself) we should probably consider that somewhere, Maggie's story plays out almost every day.

sad indeed

...but it seems almost realistic, you know? You really had me believing there was such a tragic story. And that says a lot. This poem was muy bueno!

"Maggie's Dream". Write on Bi-pedal-guy!

Exquisitely written

I'm thankful, but stunned that this was NOT from personal experience...it was so compelling, I was close to tears. Outstanding!

Thanks, MC and Meridian

I really appreciate your encouraging comments. I have to admit that I got pretty sad when writing Maggie's Dream. I think I'm becoming a cancer surviver, and I'm already past five. (way past) I'm thankful that all of the kids I've known with cancer have survived, and are now healthy.
Thank God, and once again, thank you.
