The Deed

Cold night.
It is dark,
All aspects dark,
Except for the lamp.
But even that gives of little light.

He stands,
Always at attention.
He knows his prey is near,
Just out of range;
“Once he crosses into the light,
Yeah, that’s when I shoot.”
He reassures himself.

This deed is a dark one,
This deed he does not want.
But he must
For the common good,
He set himself out on this quest.
It is his own doing.

“Why must it be so dark?
It just makes me all the more cold.
Almost as cold as this deed
That i must do.”
He’s still just standing there,
Not a thought, but this dream.

As the lamp’s oil burns,
The light grows dim.
He knows this not to be good;
He set up a line,
But now that line creeps nearer.

There’s not much left to do,
Just stand and wait,
Prideful and honorous.
This dark deed, for the common good.

“Almost there,
That damned lamp.”
They’re almost there too,
His prey closing in,
As only a halo of light
Is left on the ground.

As the end draws near,
A smile can be seen.
He has now noticed the snow;
The snow on the ground,
The snow on his face.
And as he looks up
He sees not only the stars,
But the stars of lightfilled snow
Fall onto him.

He feels safe now,
As the jaws tighten
And the teeth ripe and tear.
He feels safe now,
For the light from the snow
Will protect his soul.

For the common good
For what must be done
His sacrifice, his suicide
This dark deed has gone.
