The Chase

The rain was cold and full moon bright
Whence I set out upon that fateful night
Distant wolves at the moon were baying
My pony, restless, began his neighing
Thence came a voice which stole my breath
and beheld his eyes as cold as death
His countenance black as the midnight storm
the nightmares of children had taken form
my heart within my chest did race
and spurred on my pony and he gave chase
Faster now I urge my steed
through mud and rain of primal need
his saber slung about his waist
those piercing eyes and hooded face
harder now I force the ride
yet still he gains with every stride
my heated pace in vain I fear
the blackened devil draws ever near
his mount, its’ eyes seem set a fire
and perceived in them his masters ire
now off the road and over brook
a twisting, wooded, path I took
down Green Mountain, across Beggars’ ridge
Past Farmer’s pond and the Covered bridge
The sky was black and the thunder rumbled
The rain beat down and my pony stumbled
Slowly it seemed to the ground I fell
And there he stood that spawn of hell
Thus quickly to me feet did stand
And drew forth my blade with trembling hand
His wicked saber from steel coined
This phantom and I in battled joined
Harder now he pressed the fight
The ring of steel and flash of light
Now with cut and croise and parry,
Fought I until my arms grew weary
Thus before my death did take a knee
And the face of terror then did see
I did to the horror of my fate resign
Yet the face beneath that hood was mine
What witchcraft, what evil, what villainy
To find the demon I was running from is me
Or rather my fear of trust, my fear of love
Needing others to of me approve
Thus did I my phantom embrace
And welcomed then his shadowed face
Fear no more within my heart that darkened delf
For there is not to fear, save fear itself

------- Author's Notes -------

Sometimes Love, need, trust can cause us to fear.

Mr. Demalah

Hey poet! The suspense. Especially when the phantom was you. Makes a person jump outta their skin. I had to go grab some popcorn. It was like watching a horror film. I love that.

The skills. The skills. You got em'. Please write a continuation...lol.
Astounding!
