To Patsy When I Was Young
(my first poem, 1963)
If I’ve not shown my love for you
In many days gone by,
Don’t think my love for you is dead -
No, Darling, it is I.
I dare not show my love to you,
For fear of losing yours...
(Dare I not show my love for you,
And still be sure of yours?)
I tried it once,- do you recall
The memory of it?
You turned me down, told me to go -
I nearly lost my wit.
We’re back together now,
It’s nearing of the time
When I would ask of you,
“My Love, will you be mine?”

wrote this in English Class in 10th grade, got caught by the teacher, and he read it out loud to the class as I sat there turning red and feeling like an idiot....
then he wrote something on it, and handed it back to me:
"Not bad - will give you a B and extra credit for this."

I like your afterthought. Smiled when I read it. I can imagine the embarrassment, but the grade and the extra credit that came about as a result was worth it.
