My Family

A familiar site, something thats so familiar that it's as if I've always been around it my whole life. The feeling of warmth. Driving up to Melissa's Grandparents house.

An older small house, with just enough yard to relax, surrounded by pine trees, and a view of the sun. As the fall leaves ruffle under my feet walking up the sidewalk into their porch. I get a very good feeling. The feeling I used to get whenever I'd walk into my own grandparents home.

You walk in and the temperature of the house is always comfortable. The older wooden cabinets and look of the small house. I cant explain it except that it feels like home.

I look outside, toward the old barn, that some day I'd like to renovate, at least keeping it's old charm, but fixing the stalls and maybe making a separate place for all the hay, and sealing the cracks so that the future horses will stay warmer in the winter time. I used to be afraid of those animals, and now im fascinated by them.

After checking out the old barn and giving 'gone' a quick pet and goodbye we'll go inside and talk for a while with her grandparents. Though we all don't agree with everything, there is no barriers we just are comfortable with each other as if we've all been family our whole lives.

A few cups of coffee, and a few laughs from her grandpa's jokes later, we'll get our coats on and drive not even a quarter mile up the road. Drive up the driveway from the house she grew up in, and after getting out of the car I'll look up. Now by habit, if it's a clear night you can see every single star so clear. Her yard lights up just as bright as her eyes as she gazes upon the stars with a calm since of security.

We'll walk a few steps up into her parents house, though being greeted by several dogs and a couple cats all at once just reminds me how much of an animal lover she is just as I am. And sitting down realizing that here I am again. In that familiar setting. Warm, no stress, no worries, just relaxed. Settled I guess is the word that best fits. Im wearing my favorite pair of comfy sweatpants, a baggy sweatshirt and am so warm in the comfort of her parents house.

Her family taking me in every moment they get as if it's a treasure, As is if it's a gift. Every moment they get they are showing me in their own way that they trust me and want me in their family. How her mother worried before she met me, then how her mothers confidence grew every time she saw her daughters eyes light up when I was with her when we first met.

How quiet her brother still is, though when he's around for a few minutes we get to talking like good buddies, talking about whatever comes to mind just to get some words out to show each other we are cool with one another. And how her father truly does have a heart that maybe he hasn't been able to express in words, though I can see where his heart is, and he didn't have a problem letting me take his snowmobile the first time out into a field with no hesitation, though it was the first time I've ever even been on one.

We'll now head toward my parents house. Though nobody knew what to expect when I was bringing home another "girl", here she was everybody look who stole my heart. My mothers eyes lit up. Never has her eyes looked at me and then her and then me again as to say, "she's the one". My mother truly knows whats best. She doesn't have to be around me all of the time to know me the best. Shes my mom, she just knows these things. Walking into a home full of people who love me, they greet her as if she was one of their own. And immediately everybody agrees she's that one person I was meant to live for.

So we go back there on weekends and when we get free time, to just stop and say hey, to my father who has written and spoken to me in so many ways on how to treasure this woman that I live for. How my brothers in their own way either by a hug, or a call on the phone will let me know things are alright. Or how my mother can just talk in that gentle voice and have no worries what so ever, and talk to Melissa, truly knowing she'll be able to have the daughter she's always wanted.

To waking up this Sunday morning. Making my breakfast and pouring my morning coffee, I sat down to enjoy my food and couldnt stop thinking about how happy I truly am. And how thankful I am to have found this family. To have been led here by my family where Life can now begin. So that someday my family, can sit here and type out or think about how warm and comfortable their lives have been, and they can look back at Melissa and I and say the same things that i've just said about my family.

just reading this again...

i am so moved by your thoughts, and warmed by the love in these sentences, and very happy that i can be a part of your life as your father - and i am so very happy for both you and melissa -it's been a long time coming, but you are finally nearing the beginning of a wonderful life together, and i look forward to dancing at your wedding. if ever i saw two people who the heavens had a part in joining, it is the two of you - there is just no way to adequately describe the beauty of how life is now, but i'm very proud, and very happy to see it for both of you. love... dad

every time...

every time i read this again, i see another thought that reaches out and wraps itself around my heart and makes my happiness for you both stronger, my smile bigger from the pure enjoyment of knowing you both are truly happy, and that what you have is a thing of beauty.

peace... dad
