Welfare Vs. Charity

The rich give “some of theirs” to be sure,
but they take “much of ours” for the poor.
The first one’s charity.
Welfare’s from you and me,
and it costs all of us more and more.

------- Author's Notes -------

This is an attempt to make a Limerick out of my favorite definition (or camparison) of "Charity and Welfare". I wanted to target politicians in this Limerick, but the word has 4 syllables, (too many) and "Rich" has only one.

My original definition is :

Charity is when the rich give some of what's "THEIRS" to those less fortunate than "THEY" are.

Welfare's when rich (politicians) give some of what's "OURS" to those less fortunate than "THEY" are.

(not necessarily less fortunate than "WE" are)

Making a good point

I like this poem for the political point it is making. People sometimes forget that poetry is not always about feelings but about the life around us as well. The Poem and comment sums up your statement very well.. Good job
