In A Heart Beat

Awakened from a peaceful night’s sleep
The phone ringing, still in a dream like state
Wondering who in the world could be calling this late
Picked up the receiver and heard your voice on the line

The tension in your voice was quite clear
Then you began to sob releasing a flood of tears
In the background I heard the sirens
Next paramedics scurrying to the scene
You dropped the phone and let out the most chilling scream

A shiver suddenly went down my spine
Macabre thoughts racing through my mind
All at once the phone went dead
I was overwhelmed with a disturbing sense of dread

It was 4 o’clock in the morning when the first call came in
Not knowing the circumstances, I felt like jumping right out of my skin
As the minutes ticked away, patience was growing thin
An eternity passed before the phone began to ring

Amidst tears and a voice choked with fear I tried to make out what you had said
All I caught was meet me at the hospital right away
Splashing water on my face, throwing on clothes with a sense of haste
My whole body shaking with fear
I climbed in the car and asked God to please steer

As I arrived at the E.R. I heard the words cardiac arrest
I felt my heart sink within my chest
Nitroglycerin they placed on his tongue
Difficult to understand how this could happen to one so young
Paddles, procedures, and tests they did run
The diagnosis was poor at best
A struggling young family once more put to the test

Putting it into perspective he is still alive
With love and care he will survive
Lives forever changed by one moment in time
Brings this thought to mind
We best love those close to us while we can
For we never know what tomorrow may bring

Thank you Terrye

for your concern and prayers. Something like this really makes one think about how easy it is easy to take life and our family members for granted.

What a shock.

This conveys the horror of a truly horrible experience. Starting your day with such a scary and confusing call from a loved one is no small part of it.
I pray for his recovery, and for the whole family, strength to get through this time of fear and uncertainty.
I had 2 heart attacks in 2000, but now my heart health is probably better, because I have gradually been taken off all but one of my heart meds. In my mind, this allows room for optimism.
Be well, and may God bless you and your family.
