My Apocalypse Part 3

I stand there dumb and silent, and I wonder what just happened;
I can’t believe all those hellish things could simply up and vanish!
But I breathe a relieved sigh in the valley’s morning light.
Is this heaven, I wonder aloud, or some strange afterlife?

“Of course not,” sighs the yawning sun, which makes me start with fright
“You’re simply back to normal, back to the day’s most soothing light”
Where was I, then, I question it, and where am I right now?
“Your mind,” it says unhelpfully, and I give it a confused scowl.

“Don’t get cross,” it says with a wink, “I’ll explain myself to you:
You had gone completely crazy, schizophrenic through and through!”
That is not true, I say in haste, I’m sane right now; I know it!
“You’re right,” it says with a smile, “but you were insane that moment.

Do you recall what you did before perching on that snow cap?
You had chopped down the tree of dreams, and drank its tasteless sap!”
That’s right! I shout, I remember now, it was growing far too high.
It had simply blocked my backyard view of the ocean’s pretty tides.

“So you see, ‘twas all a drugging, a hallucination scare!”
It says “just let the sap wear off, and be done with this whole affair.”
I thank the sun; it yawns “you are welcome” while I walk away.
And I get back on my snow cap, and enjoy the early day.

THE END
