I Am Afraid

The night is dark as I walk down this deserted street, I hear footsteps behind me. Damn that car! Why did it have to break down on such a gloomy night? The fog is rolling in now. Soon I won’t be able to see if there is anyone creeping up on me. Maybe if I walk a little faster it will help. I can hear the footsteps getting closer now. I had better get to the middle of the street and start running. A car comes, blinding me with it’s headlights, but it stops, it is a policeman. I tell him that someone is following me, I tell him of my car breaking down, and why a woman is out walking this dark foggy street. He turns his spotlight down the street to see if he can see the culprit,

There in his spotlight is a paper boy doing his paper route on foot, the policeman got out of his patrol car and asked the boy, why don’t you ride a bike on your route like all paper boy’s do? I am saving my money for one sir. The policeman rote down the boy’s name and address, and later gave it to me. The next day bought that boy a bicycle.
