My First Autumn
19 November, 2009

It's time to ponder life
So I may get through winter
In my travels I have found
Outside is the place for meditation

Hoping to clear my mind
From fears and burdens alike
I set out on the empty road
That was dressed in leaves

Leaves began dancing all around me
Bidding adieu to the trees above
Never have I seen such a sight
Encore! Encore!

Words will never describe this
Majestic performance before me
Trees are painted red and orange
My favorite being vibrant yellow

The thought of a drifter emerged
With an unfamiliar sound
Air traveled through my lungs once more
As I discovered the source

Leaves surfing the wind like waves
Then crashing down ever so lightly
Scratching the ground with their tips
Then waiting patiently for the next trip

A father getting his yard together
His daughter was lengthening the process
As she leaped into each pile of leaves
Towering above her head

As I reached my door once more
He greeted me with a kiss and said
How was your first Autumn
I held him in my arms and
Answered perfect now

------- Author's Notes -------

I wrote this poem Nov. 19, 2009 in memory of my grandfather who never got the chance to witness Autumn like in New England where I am now. Rest in Peace Gramps! Although the man in the poem is my lovely boyfriend Jeremy.
