Songs

I was talking to Jack Kerouac the other day
and our conversation turned to music.
We both agreed that it is sacred.
I told him my theory that,
better than film or painting, new music is the best art form
for capturing the feelings of dreams.
He said to expound, that I was being too vague.
I said,
whenever I encounter a new soon-to-be favorite song,
I don't yet know its topography, its ups and downs,
its swells and bridges. But there is a feeling I get
of hazy clarity, of visiting a place both entirely new
and naggingly familiar. A lot like a dream, with its distortions
of reality and charged emotion. (He thought I might be right.)
But, I said, once you get to know that song, it's different:
you know the composition by heart, so it becomes
just another favorite song.
It's like a roller-coaster you've been on many times;
there's still the thrill, but no surprises.
Once you're on a bus, absorbed in your iPod,
staring out the window at the flow of the street
having the tune pumped into your ears,
it's no longer a reflection of a dream.
It's just another good song.
By then, Jack didn't know what I was talking about.
He's been dead a long time.

I understand

I fully understand what you are saying.. New and exciting lyrics like a poem leave the mind to be free to interpretation. Each line intriguing, freeing your thoughts to find their own meaning.

but once you know and have analyzed the song the fantasy side is gone.. Videos kill it even more..
Great write and a great pondering mind :)

JACK KEROUAC wrote.....

jack kerouac wrote - on the road - with the music of jazz in mind - and jazz music is the ultimate exploration of improvisation and free speech!
i should know iam currently listening to - kc and the sunshine band!
yes - you are a puppet to no one - but i was very inspired by 'songs' - because like kikki dee once said: " i've got the music in me!"
