Deserve

Sometimes in life we get what we deserve
But don't always deserve what we get
How you handle each situation
Shows your make-up and resolve

"Getting what you deserve"
What a strange concept
Do any of us actually ever "deserve" anything?
Or is that just a state of mind?

Nothing is promised to us from birth,
So how is it that we can ever feel
That we "deserve" something?

The world teaches us that if we work hard
And be good people,
We will get what we deserve

That isn't always true
Because, again, we aren't promised anything
So how can we feel we deserve something?
Good or bad, there is no way that any of us can feel
That we are "getting what we deserve"

But, that doesn't stop us from feeling that way
Unfortunately, it is natural when something bad happens
To look to the heavens and ask, "Why me?"
But, if we look to the heavens when something bad happens,
Shouldn't we also do that when something good happens?

What makes any of us feel that we don't deserve the bad,
But the good is exactly what we should receive?
If you are willing to accept the good,
Then you have to be willing to accept the bad with the same grace

So, is it true that sometimes in life we get what we deserve,
And sometimes we deserve what we get?
Is the final outcome predisposed,
Or a reaction to the events leading up to the final outcome?

Only you can decide for yourself,
Because only you can live your life
And accept that the outcome of your own free will
Will bring you "what you deserve"
Good, bad or indifferent
