Strength And Weakness

Strength and weakness
Two words that are so diametrically opposed
That they are never thought of together
But, are they so opposite?
Or are the two words more closely related than opposed?

Strength is what we are all taught to show
Never let someone see you in a moment of weakness
Frailty is something that should never be shown
Our moments of weakness and frailty are for ourselves alone

But, are we doing ourselves
A disservice by thinking that way?
Don't we show more strength
By alowing others to see us at our weakest?

Friedrich Nietzche wrote: "That which doesn't kill us only makes us stronger"
Shouldn't this also be true of sharing our weaknesses?
For only when we show weakness can we really be strong

It is so ingrained in us
That we need to be strong
The first words people offer when a tragedy occurs
Are "Be strong!"
Wouldn't it be more appropriate to show weakness at those times?
To allow people to see that you are human and have human feelings?

The world has taught us that being strong is a virtue
I believe that to find true strength
You have to be willing to allow people
To see your weaknesses

Only when you can show weakness
And embrace it,
Can you be strong enough to turn that weakness
Into a greater strength than you ever had before
