24 Hours Before The New Year
Author: Pondering Red

Midnight jumps into my room -
a rapidly beating heart of
irregular rhythms of the past year -
a montage of
my excursions -
my trials
and smiles.

An old movie is playing -
time travel to the early fifties -
many new years ago -
then was now
and now I watch then
from the corner of my eye -

Fascinating - frightful,
this passage of tme -
the natural flow of life cycles,
geological and cosmic space
drifts subtle snow sparkles
into timeless air -

the wounds on this earth
scar the year -

monster snow falls halt large cities -
pretty and fiery -
danger in the Ivory Coast -
so many events of global reportage
and so many events in my humble abode -
in my healings from
toxic encounters, from not opening drawers
of the past,
from staying frozen and numb,
thawing out a bit,
a melting iceberg,
I am warming up.

In these last moments
of this perplexing year
I tend to reflect,
yet this year
overwhelming blocks of resistance
hinder my
flow
of thinking,
tiny bits of clarity
seep out
some momentum,
keep me swaying to music.

Hundreds of crows
flew in many directions
in the dusk
pale purple sky
yesterday.

Hundreds of crows sat on branches
against a sunset gold splashed building
Was this an ominous warning
of some sort ?

I tend to think that in these moments
before the next strike of midnight,
when people kiss strangers
and the earth moves with explosions
of colours,
that mother earth
is at peace and rests for awhile
and maybe even does smile
just for a little while.

Amidst all the party and reverie,
celebration and global jubilation,
a river of tranquility
winds its way
throughout the earth
around the atmosphere
upwards
into the cosmic constellations
of space
above this tiny planet,

indeed
a smile appears
to form,
etched
into the terrain
of planet earth.

And as I await a dream,
I try ever so hard
to capture
a reflection
of that smile...
