Old Dog... New Tricks
4 January, 2011

It is said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks
I am far from an old dog,
But recently I have found a lot of new tricks

I have learned to take some chances and make some changes
And am starting to be the person that I want to be

Those changes have not come easily and have caused some pain
But, they are changes that are worth making
And will benefit me in the long run

I have said goodbye to people that were close to me,
Said hello again to some that I thought were lost
And regained deeper relationships with some that had drifted
All were the right decisions for me
And they are not the only ones I will make

The relationships that had drifted are now stronger
Though it was painful getting here
The relationships lost will be missed,
But sometimes saying good-bye is the best thing you can do

I look forward to the future now
My life is not perfect, whose is?
I am still not where I want to be, but learning and growing is a process
And a process that I am once again enjoying

The past several months, close to a year,
Have been fraught with pain...both physical and emotional
But they have also taught me much about myself
Though I knew I was a strong person,
These months have tested that strength
As well as my faith in myself and many others

Some tests still remain in my life,
But I have passed the ones I have faced so far
Not everyone in my life did
Those that didn't are no longer in my life
And have been replaced by some that came from nowhere
I am better for the new people in my life
And better for finding out who I want in my life

The future is brighter now than it was
And it is a future I eagerly await
Knowing I can handle whatever it presents
Stronger for all the experiences
And the new tricks learned by a not so old dog

I read this poem over and over! I too feel like I have learned some new tricks. More than anything is allowing a chance at happiness whether it be for a few days or a life time! Thank you again for sharing...
