The Dirge

Maybe it was a little thing, to you.
Did you know any differently?
...I will never have that answer.
But to me
sheltered so from Society...

How can I learn again
to trust?
Can I ever learn
not to shudder
when close to a man...
even if that shudder is not outwardly seen?

Cold fingers touching me, lips
in the dark

And so I lament, for loss of
What Was;
What Could Have Been.
An Innocence Lost
never to be regained...
A part of me has died.
Scared... I was. Trapped... I was.
There will always be a 'was'.
You pressed and pressed...

I retained what I could
from your 'curiosity'.
But...

I see people in a different light now.

Maybe it was a little thing, to you.

What a world, eh?

I wrote this poem mostly as healing - it's amazing how much good can be accomplished by getting your thoughts out on paper. Rape and its emotional equivalents are one of the saddest things in our culture today. Thirteen is way too young to have to go through things like that, but thank God for supportive friends, and of course for poetry! They have done more to get me through this past year than I could have ever asked for.

To Dragonsinger

WOW! That hit home hard. I also wrote a poem about rape called "waterfall of shame" Thank you for posting this. You're definitely not alone out there and i really appreciate the fact that you had the courage to share your story. I hope that anyone who ever has to go through something this awful will find the courage to tell someone and not keep it hidden. There is help available. Excellent job Dragonsinger.
