I Made It

They thought I was learning disabled, but I made it
They didn’t think I could do it, but I graduated
Got my cap and gown, walked across the stage
Got my degree at 24 years of age
They didn’t show compassion, I taught myself
Can’t take all the credit though, God was my help
Many times I did A work and got a B-
Worked hard and did my finest
Still I can attest to favoritism, to slickness
Not every student was treated the same
In spite of, getting out of there was my aim
Used to walk down that lengthy campus,
Tail between my legs
Wondering when my time was coming, when was my day
If I’d ever be like those before me and say
That this was my alma mater, that I’m a part of the alumni
That being told I was coming down to the wire wasn’t really a lie
Used to wonder if I’d ever see my final classes
Dec. 2010 seemed to be as slow as molasses
Many times I had to remove my glasses
And wipe my eyes after failing more than twice
Some teachers were effective, others were just nice
But a lot of times I needed more than nice
Because a good disposition just didn’t suffice
But I think back on all those years and where I am today
And along with my parents I can truly say
If anybody deserved their degree it was me
Not being self-centered, but I have a testimony
I’m not dumb and I never did accept people alluding to it
Thank God the chapters of this book are concluded
Dec. 2010 will be a month and year I’ll never forget
It made me realize that in spite of being beset
I could do anything I set my mind to and I still can
To God be the glory from His biggest fan
