School’s out, I’m free
Can write how I feel, what’s inside of me
This ain’t no contest, this ain’t for no grade
No one grading me how to write poetry
I mean how hard can writing poems be?

This ain’t for no award,
This ain’t for money
This is the way I express myself
If you don’t like it, then I’m sorry
Even if he or she
Of greater status than me
With a few stories published, gaining popularity
Tells me “show and don’t tell”
Write like this and that
Marking up my paper as if words are misspelled
It’s a darn poem
I can only write like me
And I must learn to be happy
With my style, my structure
My format, my expression
My lyrics, my words
My title, my creation
My design is just fine
Stop marking up and scratching through every line
What’s mine is mine to keep
The subject of poetry ain’t that deep
This ain’t for no Pulitzer prize
Do you read my eyes?
I tell no lies
When I said and when I say that I don’t understand
About the masterpiece you’re looking for
I mean it, cuz I don't
Want me to do what I'm not used to
It's impossible, cuz I can't, so I won't
I’m not Longfellow or Poe
How I flow is how I flow
So criticize, I just hope it’s constructive
Cuz my ear’s closed to destructive

Thanx Ms. Shan

Thank God it's out. I hope to be writing more. Certainly don't want the feeling of discouragement to get in the way this time.

great reading

The best writers of poems are the ones that write from the heart no rhyming words just true words and feelings.very good Meri.

Thanks Barb

I've heard that. Sometimes some writers feel compelled to rhyme, because most poetry is associated with it. But you're right. Rhyming isn't everything. It's good to use, but it can take away from a poem, especially when it is forced. Still learning how to let words flow without overdoing it.
