Come Down A Notch

Let’s talk about geography
Let’s talk about linguistics and IQ
Let’s talk about informality and formality
Let’s talk about me and you
You and I
Where we come from
Just because I talk a certain way
Doesn’t mean I’m dumb
I’m not from the north
I’m from the south
Slang usually comes out my mouth
I talk fast
And many people around me do the same
Geography impacts diction
Informal language doesn’t mean I’m lame
Doesn’t mean I’m uncultured
Doesn’t mean I’m uneducated
Think what you want
I don’t have the energy to debate it
My IQ ain’t high as a kite’s
And I’m fine with that
I understand and learn slower than some
It may take me a minute to articulate
But there’s no need to speculate
That I’m inferior to you
That you’re superior to me
Just because of your status and your degree
Whatever happened to humility?
Some folks get on top and lose it
Chest all swollen from pride
Some forget where they come from
Want everyone in town to know ‘em
To look up to ‘em
Acting sophisticated
All about classification
All about prestige
And the Ivy League
Sitting a certain way
Don’t know how to let their hair down
To loosen up from being uptight
High-mindedness ain’t right
And it compelled me to write
I mean, I may not know every word
In the Oxford Dictionary
But it’s all right
To get to know and mingle with me
It’s almost like the Titanic
With Jack and Rose
Rose broke away from being up here
To coming down a few levels
She was a rebel
A rebel with a cause
She couldn’t hang with the distinguished
Sipping tea
She wanted to branch out and be free
If you think I’m a commoner
And not good enough
To be a part of your social class
Then think what you will
It’s all right with me
Don’t let my status fool you
Cuz I can switch from informality
To formality
I don’t have to overdo it with the words
I can be myself and use what I know
And you don’t have to overdo it
With the questions
Trying to teach me a lesson
About who’s smarter than who
If you come correct
Then I’ll answer you
Welcome civility and be about humility
Never underestimate someone’s ability
Your degree or status don’t make you no better than me
You just went back to school
And obtained two or three
But you’ve got some smart people
Who have none
Prestige and higher education don’t make a person
Knowledge and power doesn’t either
Location doesn’t define intelligence
It wouldn’t hurt to show some benevolence
What’s materialistic will fade away
Some friends are all about the Benjamins anyway
If you know it, then you ain’t got to show it
Overdo it and gloat
It’s one thing to be happy about accomplishments
And it’s another thing to showboat

Nothing wrong with being a part of the Ivy League. Just used it to illustrate a point.

Nice try. But it'll take more than that to insult me.

Have a good one.
