Dear Heart And Lungs

Heart,
How long will you keep beating?
How long will you keep pumping blood?
Lungs,
How long will you keep allowing
And emitting oxygen?
I feel the drum from within
I feel the rise and fall of my chest
I wonder every time my head
hits the pillow
Every time I take a rest
I wonder how long?
When is the last day of the beating drum?
Don’t wish it to be soon
Just wondering how long can it go?
I guess whenever the
Good Lord says so

The fist opens and closes on the inside
Air enters and escapes
How do these mysterious organs work?
How many times do they function a day
To keep this body alive
It’s amazing that it takes these organs
For me to survive
Sometimes the thumping is so quiet
Yet I feel so fine
Sometimes my breathing is so calm
Yet I’m still here
All right and okay
Seeing crystal clear
Don’t feel the blood flowing
But as long as I’m warm
In good condition
Flighty as a bird
Able to do what I should be able to
Waking up every morn
Because of love shining through

…then that’s all that matters…
Whether or not I feel what’s keeping me alive
Just as long as I survive
