Lizard Lips around the eyebrows
Round the lips
Cocoa butter round the face
Hydro-cortisone round the nose
The forehead
The chin
The chest
The neck
Coat ever so gently
Paint the canvas
Dip the index and middle fingers
In the jar of gel
Paint it nice
Until every edge is laid down
Straightened
Comb out the hair
Moisturize it
Brush it
Then take a scarf
Shake it
Then tie it
Around your head
Til dry

Then curl the hair
Take your time
With each strand

Then after you’re done
Step back from the mirror
And smile
Hug yourself
Before you step out in public
Knowing nobody
Can love you as much as
God and you

Be happy girlfriend
On you you can depend
The wind
May blow it back
What you try to hide
But high or wide
God made you as you are
Don’t take no chisel
Don’t take no knife
Undoing what God did
Because you’ll never be satisfied

Take what you have
And love it
Caress it
Don’t distress
Don’t be a crying mess
Rock your own runway
Don’t be vain
But be proud of what you have
Who’s blinking at you
Your reflection
Cause at the end of the day
Nobody can love you more
Than God and you
Look at your jawbones
Caress them too
Cause before long
You’ll be 62
And when will you get over you?
What you don’t like?
What you wish you didn’t have?

Look at those shoulders
Love your body
Folks will always have something to say
But it ain’t about what
They think anyway
Love your clay
Before you’re gone away
Smile baby smile
Shake that head from side to side
Have some pride
Be proud of what God created
From your head to your toes
From your face to your neck
From your back to your whatever
You should endeavor
To love you

Feel good when you step in to that car
When you step out
When you walk in
When you walk out
When you’re seen
When you’re not
Love what you can’t change
Don’t act strange
Love your clothes
Your shoes
All of you
Every inch of clay
Love your self
Day by day
Let love for you grow
Tall like the sycamore
Feel good about you
The glasses you wear
The texture and length
Of your hair

Your features are your parents
You can’t help how you were birthed
(God bless their soul)
So what they got you got
Look at yourself
Only once
Cause 1000 times is too much
Feel whole to the touch
Appreciate your assets
Then leave the mirror
Be confident that what you’ve got
May not be what a model has
But at least it’s real
All you
And with that
To thine own-self girl
Be true

------- Author's Notes -------

Compliment or criticism, words don’t make you. Love you for you and do it for you. Do what you want to do.
