Seasonal Adjustment

Swallows surge from wet beds
as reeds fade, curling.
They congregate restlessly,
swing on telegraph wires
until they flock in unison
to fire-baked skies of Africa.

As they dot the horizon
melancholic shadows
reflect sun’s feeble embrace.
Daylight dwindles,
spills into long sombre nights,
disrupts circadian waves.

Hedgehogs sleep beneath
last season’s rumpled sheets.
Shrouded by a stratus duvet
lethargy overwhelms my
lounge on the couch,
binging biscuits with sugared tea,
intermittently drifting away.

Struggling to stand,
I draw the drapes across
perpetual twilight,
slump deeper into
my pillows, cocooned
in hopelessness.

Sun winks through trees
arms now buttoned with buds,
its rays weave a shawl
around my shoulders.
Listening to swallows trill
in fresh grown reeds --
I rise.

------- Author's Notes -------

Seasonal affective disorder is sometimes known as winter blues and is more widespread than people are aware. Symptoms of SAD include difficulty waking up in the morning, morning sickness, tendency to oversleep as well as to overeat, and especially a craving for carbohydrates, which leads to weight gain. Other symptoms include a lack of energy, difficulty concentrating on completing tasks, and withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities. All of this leads to the depression and feelings of hopelessness.

O.M.G.?

Oh wow? I have all of this except for one. I am one, that is not aware? Since I retired over a year ago, that has happen. O.M.G! I have S.A.D. Gosh darn it! I need to get out of this. I hardly drive my truck now. Guess I'll start it up and go look at toys. The hardware store, dirtbike shop, and get myself out of this. Thanks Cap! I needed this slap in the face. Morning sickness is what I don't have. I got that poem reading it twice. Great poem!
