Runaway Whelk

Hard shelled
Cast on ocean’s shore
Bleached white
From sunny days
And rough
From sand’s harsh touch

I find myself far
Far from home

But pick me up
Look into my mouth
Pink and mysterious
Hold me to your ear
And I’ll whisper
From whence I came
