You Will Never Know

I'm not certain that I can call myself a writer.
I mean, a legitimate writer is published, right?
I am not published.
I have no hope of ever being published.
That is all right, though, as I enjoy writing.
if for no other reason than that I like to see
if I am able to construct sentences, thoughts,
use the beauty that is words....
simple words...
if I am able to put them together
in a place that holds them, cradles them,
and shows them to others,
and perhaps those others will see them
and know and understand the value
and the importance of those combinations of letters
to me, the one who put them together there.
It is no easy task.
None who do this will say that it is easy.
You never know if what you put to paper
will be of any value,
or if anyone will care about it.
It's sometimes a bit dangerous,
like stepping close to the edge of a great chasm,
peering over the rim, looking down... down...
and feeling the giddyness that goes with that,
and then stepping back a bit,
and wondering why you felt you had to do that....
It's a lot like that.
You have to try, you have to dare,
you have to at least try...
otherwise you will always wonder,
you will always be saddened,
because you didn't try.
So you write.
Partly because you want to,
partly because you have to,
partly because there is no other way
to quiet the voice inside
that demands it of you.
Sometimes it hurts,
sometimes it pleases,
but you never know until it's done.
And you never know when you are done.
You never know.
You will never know.
And that is why you write
