She Asked Santa
10 March, 2017

Such a pretty little girl,
golden ringlets of hair around,
almost five, and dressed up today,
and smiling, because daddy said
they would go see Santa,
and here they were!
The line to sit on Santa's lap
wasn't too long, and she stood in line,
rocking on her toes and heels,
in anticipation, with that beautiful smile...
the smile that lit up the whole world.
Well, it lit up her daddy's world, anyway.
Santa was doing a great job,
paying close attention to each child
as they listed their requests,
taking his time with each child,
making sure he treated each one
as if they were the most important child,
and their wants and wishes were
worth only his undivided attention.
Santa had an elf helping him with the
children, and another elf,
who held a notepad, and was writing,
keeping track and listing the things
that each child was asking for,
which was kind of neat, as the list
eventually made it to the parent of the child,
just to help out for shopping.
And then it was her turn!
Oh, such a big smile, that suddenly,
marvelously, got bigger, if that was possible,
and she fairly flew up the few steps,
and climbed up, with help from an elf,
to sit on Santa's lap.
Daddy watched his little girl,
proud of how she looked in her new dress and coat,
how grown up and ladylike she was trying to be,
and the picture was taken,
and Santa asked her the question,
and the elf with the pen and pad leaned in,
and the little girl answered Santa....
and Santa raised an eyebrow,
looked out to her daddy,
and the elf with the pen and notepad wrote something,
then stopped,
and she started to cry, just a bit,
and pulled out a tissue from her pocket,
then helped the little girl down from Santa's lap,
and walked with her to her daddy,
as it was her job to give the wishlist to the parent,
and as she handed the list to the little girl's daddy,
the lady who was the elf broke, and tears fell,
and she went off somewhere....
and the daddy looked down at the note,
which had a preprinted caption:
ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS:
"I want my mommy and daddy to get back together again."
And daddy started to cry, just a bit,
and he took his little girl's hand and they walked away.....
