Love Poem To Summer

Baseball I will miss you:
Sun melting through me like honey,
The crack of the bat connecting
With a 100 MPH fastball,
The voices of 30,000 fans melded together,
Hots dogs and beer and peanut shells crunching under our feet.

Green, I will miss you:
Green, so brilliant, it almost aches,
The smell of a thousand freshly mown blades,
The leaves of the hydrangea by the side of the house,
a burst of chlorophyll soaking in the light,
The soft, hopeful green of new things being born,
A medley of green in a summer salad:
Lettuce, and cucumbers, and green peppers that actually taste green.

Night insects and frogs, I will miss you:
Croaks, and trills, and peeps,
A soothing symphony to ease me toward sleep,
a little dinner, TV with my husband, a glass of peach wine,
The back door open, an invitation to the moon, the stars,
smells of grill smoke drifting on the breeze.

Lake Huron, I will miss you:
The hiss and shush of your waves,
Petoskey stones, frozen history, elegant twists and curves ,
colors only nature could imagine. And sand as far as the eye can see.
Your waters, green, and gray, and blue, crisp and cold.
You can still feel them on your skin even after you have gone home.

Warm, clear blue I will miss you.
Wheeling evening bats,
Frozen yogurt,
Bare legs and arms,
Brown skins,
Bonfires,
Long walks,
Farmers market produce,
Buzzing cicadas,
Bursting Crayola flowers,
Hopping crickets,
Tiny toads,
Road trip discoveries,
Outdoor music concerts,
Open car windows,
Grilled burgers,
Conversations on Mom's deck...
Summer, you are my brief romance,
Full of spark and promise,
But over way too quickly,
And I will miss you.

------- Author's Notes -------

Feeling blue as the end if summer approaches, so I decided to write about it.
