Oil Well, Oil Well
O' Monstrous mosquito
Siphon the earth
Of its mirth and marrow

Proboscis, Proboscis
Salvation's rare sparrow
Save us the Earth
From its mirth and marrow

Hobbesian, Hobbesian*
O' humanity's dark Pharaoh
Siphon the earth
Of its mirth and marrow

------- Author's Notes -------

NOTE 1: *Hobbesian - is a metaphor for the dark quadrant of human behaviour. It is a term I created and is inspired by the 17th century writings of English political philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes developed a comprehensive theory of nature, including human behaviour. His most-renowned work, The Leviathan (1651), advocates absolutist government as the only means to ensure order and security. In a microcosm, Hobbes asserted that to avoid social chaos, anarchy or unlawfulness, man needs to be ruled over by a central absolute authority. Hobbes postulated further that man is by nature egotistical, greedy and self-assimilated, a political animal who is in constant conflict with his fellow man and environment. The poem uses metaphorical devices to conciliate the concrete with the abstract . . . as well, the poem's cyclical paradigm ends up where it began, cynical, leaving the reader void of any hope. In the last anaylysis, the poem's message is an indictment against the human condition's inability to right itself, augmented and plagued interminably by a perpetual cycle that ultimately leads the human condition down the road to failure; especially, when it is guided by a steering wheel of compromised morality. After all, the sun will one day douse its blinding brilliance and, along with it, the compromised morality of a vulnerable humanity. I guess, our demise qualifies it as the ultimate failure.

NOTE 2: "Pharaoh" = tyrant or central authority. That is, humanity is governed or ruled by dark behaviours, such as greed, envy, want and so forth.

Sublimate the Convolution

Dear Mr. Kontos,
I admire how you use the cyclical paradigm component to bring full circle your poem's cynicism. Although cynicism is the poison of our time, it is also that very reflex of expression that helps us to counter the helplessness we feel when we cannot influence or alter things that which appear inevitable. Further, it is alarming when one singlemindedly considers the poem's message to be pessimistic. Why? That's a no-brainer: When people make a choice to close their minds to ideas and diversity, they put up barriers that consciously perpetuate and fuel the cyclical patterns of human behavior. By this (failing to learn by its mistakes), the future can only serve humanity a greater or consequential holocaust.

If the world is truly sophomoric, as you see it Mr Kontos, then my hat goes off to you on your clever Shakespearian-like soliloquy. However, only the future can reveal you as either a prophet or a charlatan.
Truly,
Dr. Kohnstein (Doctors Without Borders)

Convolution is a pretzel by any other name . . .

Dr. Kohnstein:
Thank you for your comments. I am not certain whether I believe the world is sophomoric, but I do strongly believe those who can most influence change in the world do not do so for the betterment of the human condition; in fact, we could all do a lot better. "Some see things as they are and say, why. I dream things that never were and say, why not."
Thank you again.
Warmest regards,
Frank Kontos
