Long, Steep Hill

I’m old, just turning the corner now,
And looking down this long and very steep hill…
Lord, but it’s a long and steep one!
Never saw one before,
Never imagined one like this at all.
I’ve seen a lot of the results from others
Going down this hill –
Hell, we all gotta do it, sometime,
Right?
But most of us never really get the whole idea —
We don’t fully understand it all,
Until that moment,
That gut-wrenching moment
When the fear turns to ice inside you,
And you know —
That this is your hill…
Your hill,
And yours alone.
Nobody else can slide it the way
You gotta, the way you gonna…
Nope — nobody else can do that.
It’s all on you,
And you can wanna be anywhere else,
Someplace else, all you wanna be,
But you ain’t, you know…
You’re right where it’s at,
right where you are,
And it’s your turn to slide.
You just take it as it is,
And you push off…
Ain’t no other way to do it…
No other way to go.
