You Were

Kind, sweet,
Always saying the right thing…
That was you…
Or at least the you I knew.

The you I knew was everything I’d always wanted…
So, when it really came down to it…
Was I really willing to risk losing you?

Sure, you changed, but everyone does.
You only started drinking...
And you only hit me once,
But was I willing to risk you in spite of that?

You started coming home late,
And you wouldn’t tell me why…
And all of the sudden I realized…

You aren’t the you I thought you were…
I thought that you were somewhere deep inside,
Somewhere so deep,
that I thought that if I tried hard enough I could bring you back,
but that was just a dream that would never reach reality ,
We started drifting farther and farther apart…
Until I lied…

I lied to myself when I said you loved me,
I lied when I said you cared,
I’d even protect you from the truths that I was so afraid of…
Or was I really protecting me?
I said I loved you,
When deep down I knew the truth…
I said I would stick by your side,
But it was hard when you didn’t stick by mine.

Now all I have to hold onto,
Is the me inside of you…
This piece I have to leave with you,
Along with the past we shared,
And all the love I’d lost…
All of the tears I’ve cried,
All the prayers I’ve wasted…

This would be the beginning of a new start for me…
Because along with the me I left with you,
You left you with me.
