His Picture

His picture sits beside my bed
reminding me of where he's been.

No smile across his face;
a straight back and square shoulders
in a uniform made just for him.
The look of emptiness; the look of
sternness, look of hard core men.

His picture hangs on the wall
his arms folded around me
in his soft embrace.

One hangs above the old rocking chair,
Reminding me of his time spent at home.
There are his pictures everywhere,
Pictures of our vacation, pictures of our wedding, pictures of our dating
years, pictures from every place.

Now his picture sits upon an empty coffin,
to remind us of his duty he full filled.
In that far off country, away from those who loved him most.
No longer shall I hold him tight, see his face in the morning light,
just that picture that sits beside my bed.

These pictures of him surround me, not letting me forget the man I loved for
so long. The man who has left my life.
