His Nightmare Ends

A child cries out in bitter fear
as a hand is raised in anger
cowering in the corner he tries to hide
the frightened child loses dinner

"Clean up that mess you monster child"
with wide eyes he quickly obeys
and is swat at as he runs past
this time it was a near miss

He listens to raging in the other room
nothing to do with him
he listens for heavy footfalls
to let him know the targets changing

Quickly he accomplishes his task
Thorough, so perfect, done with care
He tiptoes down the hall to his bedroom
Hopefully there he'll be safe for the night

He hears the screaming continue
then a thud and a sudden quiet
too scared to move from his bed to see
afraid he closes his eyes and prays

"Please God protect me and mommy
from Daddy when he's feeling so mean
Please let him be happy once in a while
so mommy won't have to scream"

The quiet silence is broken
thunderous steps heard upon the stairs
heading in the child's direction
the boy closes his eyes in fear

"I know you're not asleep you little brat"
he says nearly running across the room
grabbing the child beneath the blanket
the child to terrified to scream

"Please daddy I'll be good"
"yeah right, that's what you always say!"
he releases him hard toward the bed and the wall
the child's head lops to the side... and he's gone
