A Wonderful Life

I sit here alone
Watching "A Wonderful Life"
My mind thousands of miles away
I think of what I am missing
What is absent from my life

I should be thankful for what I have
My life, my home, my friends
Yet I am sad and feel distant

The man I love is far away
In a far off land over the sea
Away from his family
Alone with his memories

I can only wonder what it must be like
For him so far from home
Is he celebrating in some special way?
With his men and strangers on this holiday

So many things people take for granted
The loved ones they sit beside
The life that goes on everyday
The food they eat and presents they give
The joyful look in their children's faces

Do they for a moment take the time
To think of those separated by war
The sacrifices the families make everyway
The aloneness felt by the soldiers
The things they are missing this day

Are they thinking of the families left behind
The empty seat at the table
The person missing from the family pictures

Perhaps I am just a sentimentalist
Feeling my holiday woes
As I watch the soldiers on TV
Saying hello to the folks back home

Perhaps I am just feeling alone
As I sit stationed close to the phone
Incase he gets his chance in line
In case my true love calls

I think of all those celebrating
Across the world so large
I smile thinking of holidays at home
and the soldiers gift of "A Wonderful Life"

Dreamer...

your poem touched my heart, drew a tear, caused a lump in my throat, making it difficult to swallow or read w/o tears coating my face. your poetry has so much love and innocence. we do really take some forms in life for granted until it is either taken away or out of our reach/touch...it usually takes another soul to point it out to us in different ways...your poem found that soft side of my heart i thought had died..thank you for this poem you share w/us, I pray that you and your loved one will soon be reunited ,and all other military personnel...MERRY CHRISTMAS!
