Peace
21 October, 2005

An alarm wakes a man from his slumber;
Gainful employment consumes most of his day.
Fear of the future keeps him encumbered,
Afraid his earthly goals might slip away.

In time, he climbs the ladder of success,
And buys a bigger house and faster car.
His family and friends are quite impressed,
They all believe his dreams will take him far.

But, deep inside, there’s still something missing,
An emptiness that nothing seems to fill.
Feelings that he finds himself dismissing,
Are dreams he seems unable to fulfill.

Up he climbs, far bolder in his actions.
Like Jason, searching for his golden fleece.
His efforts only serve as distractions,
To hide the fact that he can find no peace.

He ascends into the bowels of this world,
Storing his treasures, safe in their coffer.
Still searching, as the future is unfurled,
For the one thing this world cannot offer.

You’ll never find peace through selfish pursuits;
If you reach for the sky, it won’t be there.
The virtues of peace, ambition pollutes;
Damage even success cannot repair.

There will always be a new hill to climb,
New goals waiting after this one is reached.
Peace is not something for which we have time,
It lies behind walls that cannot be breached.

You need only faith to open that door,
The courage to walk where prophets have trod.
Once on that road, you’ll be empty no more,
For this path leads to the kingdom of God.

As Jesus said to the wealthy young man;
The things of this world determine your course.
Peace has eluded you since this began,
Your ambition is disharmony’s source.

You can search a lifetime and never find,
The repose that makes your emptiness cease.
Leaving the material world behind
Is the only way you’ll ever find peace.

I hope I find it someday.

I hope I find peace someday. But it's almost impossible to not reach for something. But that's it, isn't it. You can't find peace while climbing mountains. Good one.

We will never have peace.

We will never have peace as long as we strive to be anything more than what God made us Megan. God bless.
