Great Responsibility

From the day air first fills our lungs
Until we take our final breath,
We choose the meaning of our lives,
By what remains after our death.

The things that we’ve done for ourselves
Are taken with us to the grave.
While those who do for someone else
Are remembered by what they gave.

Some are given wealth and power,
And great responsibility.
They’ve the means to make a difference,
And change another’s destiny.

But, while many have been chosen,
Few will listen to our Lord’s voice.
They’d rather take care of themselves,
Than choose to make the selfless choice.

They have homes they do not live in,
And they have cars they do not drive.
They ignore the poor and homeless,
Who fight each day to stay alive.

Yet, if the rolls had been reversed,
Would they then say greed was healthy?
Or would they fail to understand
The indifference of the wealthy.

The treasures God gives each of us,
Were never meant for us alone.
Gifts and talents don’t define us,
We’re not measured by what we own.

How we decide to use these gifts,
Is what the Lord chooses to see.
For with each blessing we receive,
Comes great responsibility.

If death is not the end of you,
Do you believe you’ll be prepared,
To explain why the gifts God gave,
Were often used but never shared?

A legacy grows like a tree
Sharing the harvest of our deeds.
But dry and barren is the soil,
For those who never plant the seeds.
