Promises

I can’t promise you tomorrow
When all I have is today.
The future’s unpredictable,
And promises slip away.

I cannot even guarantee
That I’ll live to see the dawn.
So tell me what a promise means,
When tomorrow may be gone.

For if tomorrow never comes,
And I pass, or I am killed,
Will you then base your memories
On promises unfulfilled?

I can promise, from this moment,
Till the second my life ends,
You will be more than a lover,
You will also be my friend.

For as long as you stand with me,
And our journeys are as one,
We will take this road together,
Riding off into the sun.

And though I cannot promise you,
Happily ever after;
Nor pledge that your tomorrows will
Be filled with love and laughter,

I can state this fact in earnest,
Knowing full well what I say,
What I feel for you grows stronger
With each moment of the day.

And if the Lord should grant my wish,
And entreat me with His grace,
Then I shall look through ancient eyes,
On your smiling, timeworn face.

But a wish is not a promise,
And I cannot make that vow.
The only thing I have to give
Is the love I feel right now.

For tomorrow will always be
Another sunrise away.
While promises are made and kept
With the passing of the day.

I know not what tomorrow brings,
But I promise this is true,
That with the dawn of each today,
I fall more in love with you.

Mark

I'm speechless. No truer words of love could ever be said. This is simply stunning in it's beauty.
