Neanderthal

Evolution is progression
From one stage to the next.
But if you never make the jump,
Your species will be vexed.

It happened to Neanderthal,
His road was a dead end.
For if a species can’t evolve,
Their line cannot ascend.

They used their ingenuity,
To improve conditions.
They had weapons, tools and clothing,
For nature’s transitions.

And after they discovered fire,
They learned to cook their food.
It kept them warm when things got cold,
As nature was subdued.

And so passed the millennia
One after another,
Neanderthal ceased to adapt,
Like so many others.

But when the earth began to change,
Their race was not prepared.
As temperatures started to drop,
Not one of them was spared.

They had become too comfortable,
With all the luxuries.
For comforts failed to save them when
The earth began to freeze.

And what of Homo-Sapiens?
Will they also be trapped?
If nature makes another change,
Will we learn to adapt?

If it comes to adaptation,
Can we survive at all?
Or will mankind become extinct,
Just like Neanderthal?

Environment is an important element in adaptation and evolution. Our environment itself seems to be evolving, and it may become such that the individuals most suited to it (the fittest?) may not result in an improvement of the species. Liers, free loaders, polititians, and the like may become the ones most favored by natural selection. Eventually there won't be anybody to do the work. That spells extinction. I hope I'm wrong.

You always make the reader think.

Mark, you always make the reader think. I love reading your work because it always means something. While most writers are writing about flowers and fuzzy things, you're writing about things that matter. I thank God for you.
