By high road up towards Belgrave South by gum tree off roadside
A bunch of flowers to mark the spot where male or female died
A fresh bunch there from time to time over the past few years
And every time I pass that way I feel for mother's tears.

Was it man or woman who died there a teenage girl or boy
And I asked one I thought might know a man who lived nearby
A man or woman girl or boy he did not seem to know
His only recollection was 'twas a few years ago.

Perhaps the driver felt too tired and nodded off to sleep
Or else was driving far too fast South Belgrave road is steep
Or else the car ran out of brakes things happen suddenly
And driver always come out worst when car crash into tree.

'A bunch of flowers' to mark the spot where life came to an end
On road going out of Belgrave South left of a tight steep bend
Tied to the base of old gum tree her child may well be gone
But flowers tell of a mother's grief her hurt is living on.

Each time I go to Belgrave South a bunch of flowers I see
Tied with a ribbon and tied around the base of old gum tree
And every time I see those flowers I see mother in tears
For her child past all suffering though her's will last for years.
