What Happened To Music’s Soul?

I listened to the radio
As I drove home from work.
And I noticed, in the music,
A fundamental quirk.

There was anger, and opinion,
And even disrespect,
The music just bombarded me,
My soul could not connect.

And even in the R&B,
The soul had disappeared.
The songs were all commercialized,
For pride had interfered.

It was all about the singers,
And not about the songs.
They were filled with vocal antics,
Where spirit should belong.

The singers waste time showing off,
To see who is the best.
But how good can they really be,
If feeling is suppressed?

For when someone whistles a tune,
From deep down in their heart,
Tis old familiar melodies,
I hear their lips impart.

The same is true, in public view,
And karaoke bars,
They sing the songs of long ago,
Of bygone superstars.

And therein lies the irony,
For they yet long for soul.
But the art of “self” defeats it,
And leaves an empty hole.

It is a superficial sound,
Hip hop to rock and roll,
What happened to music’s spirit?
What happened to its soul?

music from the old school

rock and roll, rhythm and blues, even country, is not the same as it used to be. and hardly anyone listens to blues or jazz anymore. the old days have gone by, sadly, and what used to be melodious has been replaced by what is now clamorous and raucus and, even, odiferous. i'm thankful that i still have my thousands of vinyl albums and 45rpm's... yep - being a dinosaur is good. Could not agree more with your thoughts. peace... shiloh
