Envy
28 April, 2010
Author: Mark Spencer

vinebar

It begins with a lollipop,
In the hands of a child.
When other children look at it,
The sight can drive them wild.

The envy grows inside of them,
They want some candy too.
They'll even take what they don't have,
If that's what they must do.

We love our pleasures and our toys,
We flaunt our piles of gold,
We build our castles on a hill,
For others to behold.

But sometimes castles aren't enough,
If they are not as grand,
As that great palace on the lake;
The richest in the land.

A man will steal, murder, and lie,
For monetary gain.
There's not a lot that he won't do,
When there's wealth to obtain.

He'll even steal his brother's wife,
If she is what he craves.
The envy that consumes his soul,
Controls how he behaves.

He's not content with what he has,
There's so much more at stake,
Success will come, the day he owns,
The palace on the lake.

And there are others on our streets,
Who have no lofty goals.
They'll kill you for your pocket change,
Their envy damns their souls.

Why can't we see the things we have,
Instead of what we lack?
If we keep walking down this road,
We won't find our way back.

The multitudes upon our streets,
Have managed to survive.
Though meals are few and far between,
These souls are still alive.

God will provide the things you need,
To get you through the day.
The one who puts his trust in that,
Will never lose his way.

For envy is a hungry fire,
That never stops burning,
A devastating hurricane,
Eternally churning.

Perhaps one day mankind will learn,
That we are all the same.
I hope, that day, we'll find the strength,
To put out envy's flame.

Yet if we feed that greedy fire,
Then we can say farewell.
For it will lead the human race,
Down to the pits of hell.

Exactly right!

This is so true! We never seem to be content with what we have! We always want more. If we have a castle, we want a palace. Great message.
