Empty Vines
3 January, 2011

Another year has come and gone,
As time keeps marching on and on.
Yet we are wrapped in life's embrace,
Distracted by this earthly race.

We disregard the ticking clock,
Until we hear the crowing cock.
That's when we realize, my friend,
That we are coming to the end.

And when we cross that finish line,
As destined in the grand design,
We'll turn around and take a look,
To see the many roads we took.

Then we'll reflect upon our deeds,
And count the times we planted seeds.
On that day, everyone will know,
Exactly how their gardens grow.

But if we brought nothing to bear,
Then we will go on standing there,
Gazing at fields of empty vines,
From across these lonely finish lines.

So ask yourself, "What have I done,
To earn salvation from God's Son?"
Did you plant trees with mighty roots,
Or empty vines that bear no fruit?

These are questions we all must face,
When we conclude this earthly race.
I hope, by then, we see the signs,
And bring fourth more...than empty vines.

I'm trying brother!

Mark, I hope my life bears fruit instead of empty vines. I want that more than anything. Awesome poem!

Another Great Poem !!

I like your poem. When I look back over my life I see that I have been a lot of places and done a few things, but I've never seen where my efforts met my own criteria for "fruitful".
It's a great poem.
