Who Was The One
26 April, 2003

My little boy was killed today,
By a fast moving car.

The driver had been drinking,
There at a local bar.

She’d been drowning in the sorrows,
Of her own tragedies.

But nothing that she tried to do,
Could erase the memories.

Her brother had been murdered,
It was a crime of hate.

Because he was homosexual,
He suffered such a fate.

By a man consumed with rage
At the loss of his wife.

Infected by a transfusion,
It was AIDS that took her life.

While the blood had been purchased,
From a girl needing a fix.

A habit that she paid for,
Every night by turning tricks.

But it was better on the streets,
Than home had ever been.

Getting raped by her father,
Over and over again.

He had served some time in prison,
Accused of child abuse.

But he had a good attorney,
And soon they cut him loose.

Loose to drive his daughter out,
To a life on the streets.

Where she sets a ball in motion,
And a circle is complete.

Who was the one responsible,
When all is said and done,

For the loss that I have suffered,
At the death of my son?

I now know who was the one,
Who caused my tragedy.

I only have myself to blame,
For that attorney was me.

------- Author's Notes -------

We must always consider how our actions will affect others in the future. If we don’t, we could wind up like this attorney.
